David Laity
Lead Designer and Owner
South Hams Garden Design
Hi, I'm David Laity, the lead designer and owner of South Hams Garden Design.
Following a successful career in Business and IT, I re-located with my family to Devon in 2011 and honed my skills as a garden designer by totally transforming the neglected 1960s garden of my new home.
Realising the importance of formal garden design training, I obtained a Diploma in Garden Design and then launched my garden design practice in Kingsbridge serving clients throughout the South Hams and wider South Devon area.
Originally from West Cornwall and with three uncles who worked in horticulture, I'm passionate about plants and love producing designs which take advantage of the amazing light, mild climate and rural/coastal views offered by the area.
I specialise in the creative re-design of outdoor spaces, typically utilising locally found materials such as slate and granite and combining these with contemporary, coastal and low maintenance planting schemes to produce amazing gardens which give pleasure to their owners and enhance the value of their properties.
With a young family myself, I realise the importance of keeping garden maintenance to a minimum allowing more time to enjoy the wonderful natural environment that we are lucky to call home. As a result, many of my designs feature bold, architectural plants which do not require regular pruning, winter protection or dead-heading.
I strongly believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the benefits of a wonderful, uplifting and peaceful garden and therefore offer affordable garden design advice and consultancy tailored to the client’s budget. I am up-front with all costs and provide a written, no-obligation quotation prior to commencing work on any new design project. This allows customers to take their time to decide whether or not to proceed with a full garden design or to just use me for occasional, ad-hoc consultancy and support.
